Google has decided to drop the Hotpot name and merge it with Google Places, which is how Google should have set it up initially. The Foursquare-like recommendation engine touted 1 million monthly reviews and allowed users to connect with other profiles they trust to see those trusted user’s personal reviews….

Even before Marrisa Mayer moved to local search, Google was rolling out frequent local search updates. From insights to tags, Local to Places, and the ability to do reputation management; Google Places has been one of the Google products that never wanders too far from the news roll. Today, we are covering the new landing page at Google.com/Places. This now suggests users to do the following: 1) Share Google Places to a Mobile Phone. 2) Add a business to Google Places. 3) View Google’s HotPot – business rating platform. 4) Google Places Boost…

The Google Maps blog announced that users will be able to upload photos taken of their Places listings. While no doubt it will require policing by Google, the move makes the review process a little more social. “The “Photos” section of the Place page now includes an “Upload a photo” link. This new link enables you to select an original photo on your computer and easily add it to the group of photos in the gallery.”…

On Thursday I went to lunch with Sage Lewis at his favorite restaurant in Akron, Rancheros Taqueria. Although I feel their food is very good and more ‘authentic’ than most Tex-Mex we get in Ohio, they are not my favorite due to their lack of a Margarita/liquor license which I sorely wish they would get….

Local businesses in San Francisco, Houston, and Chicago, can now access Google Boost, a beta AdWords program that auto-generates search ads to appear in Google’s sponsored links section and Google Maps search results pages….

Google is now incorporating rich data into it’s local search results. The upshot of this is that local directories can, on say a restaurant listing, now include the number of reviews and price range of the establishment and it will be displayed in their search listing. Today, the Official Google Blog announced that the Local Business Center is becoming Google Places. Why? According to John Hanke, Google’s VP Google Maps, Earth and Local, “Millions of people use Google every day to find places in the real world, and we want to better connect Place Pages — the way that businesses are being found today — with the tool that enables business owners to manage their presence on Google.”…
