Next Gen YouTube Marketing at SES Toronto 2011


I’ve started to gather examples of contagious viral videos being shared on Facebook, Twitter, and blogs in preparation for the Next Gen YouTube Marketing session at SES Toronto 2011. And here are three candidates that could be included in my presentation.

First, there “The T-Mobile Royal Wedding.” Yes, I know that the video was made in the United Kingdom. But Canada is a federal state that is governed as a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. Plus, the video was the #27 most viewed this week in Canada.

The T-Mobile Royal Wedding had almost 9 million views on Friday and was adding about 1 million views per day. Although it was only posted April 15, the has become one of the top 10 most-viewed videos of the past month on YouTube. The clip, which is a spoof of the now-famous JK Wedding video, has generated a lot of buzz on Twitter and recieved an early boost from celebrity choreographer Louie Spence.

Second, there’s “WTF! Insane Human Curling by BIC Flex 3.” Yes, I know this video was made in France. But Canada is a bilingual nation with both English and French as official languages at the federal level. And curling, which has been called “chess on ice,” is most firmly established in Canada, having been taken there by Scottish emigrants.

WTF! Insane Human Curling by BIC Flex 3 had more than 735,000 views as of Friday. However, it’s too soon to tell what impact this video might have on the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, which is the highest-level mixed curling competition.

Third, there’s “WestJet introduces state-of-the-art money-saving feature – April Fools.” Yes, I know that it isn’t April Fools Day. But it’s never too late to laugh along with the Canadian low-cost carrier, which provides scheduled and charter air service to 71 destinations in Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Now, these are just some of the contagious viral videos that I’ve discovered so far. If you know of any other YouTube videos that might inform, entertain, or inspire Canadian marketers — or the many American marketers who will also be attending SES Toronto — just let me know.

And remember, the list of Canadian comedians on Wikipedia includes 120 names. So, it’s okay to nominate funny videos. Or, as Wikipedia notes: “Canadian humour is an integral part of the Canadian Identity.”
