Experian Hitwise: 2010 FIFA World Cup Traffic Increased 22 Percent Yesterday‏

According to Heather Dougherty, Director of Research at Experian Hitwise, World Cup traffic increased 22 percent yesterday, June 23, 2010. The surge came on the heels of the USA victory over Algeria in the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament.‏

Not that I’m obsessed with a sport that the rest of the world calls “football” or “futbol,” but check out these stats:

  • US visits to soccer websites increased 22 percent on Wednesday (6/23/10) versus Tuesday (6/22/10). Visits were up 10 percent versus the previous Wednesday.
  • US visits to Broadcast Media websites increased 6 percent on Wednesday versus Tuesday. Visits were up 8 percent versus the previous Wednesday.
  • US visits to Print Media websites increased 3 percent on Wednesday versus Tuesday. Visits were up 5 percent versus the previous Wednesday.
  • US visits to News Media websites overall increased 2 percent on Wednesday versus Tuesday. Visits were up 8 percent versus the previous Wednesday.
  • Yahoo! Sports – World Cup 2010 website received the most visits, 32.36 percent, among Soccer sites on Wednesday.
  • Yahoo! Sports – World Cup 2010 website visits increased 21 percent on Wednesday versus Tuesday.
  • FIFA.com website visits increased 23 percent on Wednesday versus Tuesday. Visits were up 75 percent versus the previous Wednesday.
  • ESPN Soccernet website visits increased 45 percent on Wednesday versus Tuesday. Visits were up 94 percent versus the previous Wednesday.
  • ESPN3.com website visits increased 25 percent on Wednesday versus Tuesday. Visits were up 45 percent versus the previous Wednesday.
  • FoxSports Soccer website visits increased 25 percent on Wednesday versus Tuesday. Visits were up 45 percent versus the previous Wednesday.
  • Twitter.com visits increased 4 percent on Wednesday versus Tuesday. Note, this does not include traffic from 3rd party applications.
  • Facebook.com visits increased 1 percent on Wednesday versus Tuesday.

See, I’m not the only marketer who has been sneaking a peek at the matches — um, to do market research. Yeah, that’s what I was doing.

And here’s the trend that I’ve discovered: The fellowship of the vuvuzela! Even Middle Earth has been preparing for the World Cup.


Gandalf Goes to the World Cup

In response, YouTube activated a new soccer ball button on some videos this morning that, once pressed, plays the all-too-well-known sound of the Vuvuzela – a staple, arguably annoying, trumpet-like instrument blasted by fans at the World Cup games.

The soccer ball-Vuvuzela button does not only appear on soccer-related videos and has become a favorite of Internet pranksters, further edging the instrument ahead on the online meme-scene alongside “RickRolling” and the “interrupting Kanye West” memes.
